What is E20 Fuel? 20 Percent Ethanol Blend Explained
What is E20 fuel? E20 means 20 percent ethanol blend. 20% Ethanol + 80% Petrol.
Ethanol blending in petrol India is not new. It started in 2006 with 5%. But real change came after 2014. In 2021 E20 Roadmap came. In 2023 E20 fuel was launched. And by 2026 it was implemented across the country.
Ethanol is the same alcohol that is in liquor. Chemical formula C2H5OH. It is mainly made from Sugarcane, Molasses, Corn, Broken Rice. So for the first time we are trying to use fuel made from agriculture on a large scale instead of fossil fuel.
2. Biofuel Policy India: Why is Government Doing This?
The government says this is a big energy reform for India. There are 3 big reasons:
Reason 1: Reduce Oil Import
India still buys 85% of its crude oil from abroad. If ethanol is mixed in petrol, we will have to import that much less crude oil. This will save foreign exchange and increase energy security.
Reason 2: Farmer Income Will Increase
In India, sugar production sometimes becomes so high that sugar mills have excess stock. Government logic is that if ethanol is made from this extra sugar or molasses, sugar mills will get a new market and farmers will get payment faster.
Reason 3: Reduced Carbon Emissions
Government says ethanol is renewable fuel because it is made from plants. So carbon emitted from it is considered less harmful compared to fossil fuel. This leads to reduced carbon emissions.
3. The Controversy: E20 Petrol Mileage Drop & Engine Problems
But in the last few months such a big controversy has started regarding this E20 fuel that it is being discussed from social media to court.
Complaint 1: Vehicle Fuel Economy Reduction / Mileage Drop
People are saying: "Earlier the car used to give 16-17 mileage. Today the situation is that it is giving 8 and 9 mileage. And if it comes in traffic it will give 6."
Reason: Energy density of ethanol is less than petrol. So per litre you get less kilometers.
Govt Claim: 6% drop
Public Report: 15% to 30% E20 petrol mileage drop
Complaint 2: Car Not Starting, Engine Issues
"Start the car. Car does not even start. If it starts, race does not work. If you press race, car stops."
Service stations are saying: "This problem is coming a lot these days. Since ethanol has been mixed in petrol."
4. ARAI Report Controversy: If Safe, Why Hidden?
Government repeatedly says E20 is completely safe. To support this, reference of ARAI testing report is also given.
But when Mumbai banker Nachiket Deshpande asked for that report through RTI, he was told in RTI reply that due to confidential nature of data it cannot be made public.
From here questions started in people's minds: If everything is so safe then why is the report not being made public? What is there in it that is being kept hidden from common people?
On one side Nitin Gadkari says "Tell me one person whose car got spoiled due to E20 fuel". On the other side many videos are coming on social media where people are complaining about their vehicles getting spoiled due to E20 fuel.
5. Brazil Example: Why India is Different?
Whenever question is raised on E20, one thing is repeated again and again that Brazil has been using ethanol for so long. USA also uses it, Thailand also uses it. So what is the problem in India?
Brazil started ethanol program in 1973 with 5% ethanol blend. In 1975 official National Ethanol Program was launched. It was not a hasty decision. Brazil had the world's most productive sugarcane farming.
Key Differences:
| Point | Brazil | India 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 1975, Step by Step | 2023-2026, Sudden |
| Vehicles | 100% Ethanol cars since 1979. Flex-Fuel since 2003 | Most cars not designed for E20 |
| Choice | E30, E85, E100 all options available | No option, only E20 |
| Price | E100 = ₹80, E30 = ₹124. Clear difference | E20 petrol price in India same as E10 |
Niti Aayog in its report "Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India" specifically mentioned that for better acceptability, ethanol blended petrol price should be less than pure petrol. But our government said we will not give option. People will have to buy ethanol blended petrol at the same price.
6. USA & Thailand: Consumer Choice Matters
USA: World's largest ethanol producer. 16+ billion gallons per year. But still the most common fuel is E10. E15 is available in some places. E85 only for Flex-Fuel vehicles.
Thailand: Consumers have option to choose E10, E20, E85.
Truth: India is the only country in the world where fuel was suddenly changed and people were not given option.
7. Engine Compatibility E20: Will It Damage Old Vehicles?
Government is putting ARAI in front. Auto companies are also saying they tested and found E20 safe.
But experts say: Immediately no, but yes in old non-compatible vehicles there can be many types of problems in long term.
- Corrosion: Ethanol is hygroscopic. It pulls water towards itself. If fuel stays in contact with moisture for long time, ethanol separates and sits down with water. Risk of corrosion increases.
- Rubber Parts: Ethanol can degrade rubber seals, plastic components, fuel hoses and gaskets faster if they were not designed for high ethanol blend.
- Clogged Filter: Ethanol is a good solvent. It can slowly clean deposits in fuel tank and fuel line. If too much deposit reaches fuel filter, it can get choked.
This is also present in that ARAI report which government is not making public. India Today revealed this in a news.
8. Higher Octane Rating Fuel: Any Benefit?
One good thing about ethanol is it is a higher octane rating fuel. Octane of E20 is around 95-96.
This means less engine knocking. But the problem is Indian cars ECU setting is still on one setting which is set in factory. It does not change according to fuel. So even though it is higher octane rating fuel, you may not get performance benefit but you will definitely get vehicle fuel economy reduction.
9. Reduced Carbon Emissions: Is It Really Green?
Government says ethanol is renewable so reduced carbon emissions. But ground reality is not that simple.
If a lot of water is spent in ethanol production process, more fertilizers are used, or forest land is converted to agricultural land, then the whole calculation changes. For environment argument we have to see full lifecycle analysis.

Final Word: Who Benefits?
In this change everyone benefits except the consumer.
- Ethanol Companies benefit
- Petrol Companies benefit - because now pure petrol is being sold at almost double price as premium
- Car Companies benefit - because if government changes fuel without option, people who can afford will sell old car and buy new E20 compatible car
Loss: Common middle class person who somehow manages EMI for one car.
