Jantar Mantar Protest 2026: How 1 Lakh Youth Turned An Insult Into "Cockroach Movement"
At Jantar Mantar in Delhi, around 1 lakh people came out. Different numbers are coming in. Their destination was Parliament. Permission was not given. Still they came out. Police used lathis, put up barricades and on the very first day of the Monsoon Session, the capital turned into a fortress.

Where Did "Cockroach" Name Come From?
During a hearing, the Chief Justice of India Suryakant used words like "cockroach" and "parasite" for unemployed youth and social media activists.
He said: "There are youngsters like cockroach. They don't get any employment. They don't have any place in profession. Some of them become media, some of them become social media, some of them become RTI activist, some of them become another activist and they start attacking everyone."
The youth picked up that insult and made it their identity.
In May 2026, Abhijeet Deepke, a former student of Boston University, wrote: "What if all the cockroaches come together?" The joke went viral and a satire party called "Cockroach Janata Party" was formed.
But on 28th June, the story changed when education reformer Sonam Wangchuk reached Jantar Mantar and started an indefinite hunger strike.
His demand was that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should resign over repeated exam paper leaks. On 18th July, Delhi Police picked him up and got him admitted to the hospital. From that night itself, the crowd started growing and by Monday it turned into a march towards Parliament.

In 2024, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that in the Modi government's tenure, about 17.9 crore new jobs were created. Unemployment rate fell from 6% to 3.2%. Youth unemployment fell from 17.8% to 10.2%.
