How to Apply for a New Passport Online in 2026? Fees, Documents, Full Process

If you want to apply for a new passport, everything is now done online. Fill the form from home, book an appointment, visit the Passport Office once, and your passport will come to your home.

1. Passport Fees - Normal vs Tatkal

Type Fee Delivery Time
Normal ₹1500 10 to 15 days
Tatkal ₹3500 1 to 3 days
Note: ₹1500 is the official government fee. This is a one-time payment.

2. Required Documents

For a Normal passport you need 3 main documents:

  1. Address Proof - Any 1
    • Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Bank Passbook, Utility Bill, Income Tax Assessment
  2. Date of Birth Proof - Any 1
    • 10th Marksheet, PAN Card, Birth Certificate, Driving License
  3. Non-ECR Proof

What is ECR and Non-ECR?

  • Non-ECR: If you are 10th pass, you automatically get Non-ECR. Means no Immigration Clearance needed for jobs in Gulf countries.
  • ECR: If you are not 10th pass, your category will be ECR.

If you are not 10th pass but still want Non-ECR, you can submit Marriage Certificate or Spouse’s Passport.

3. How to Apply Online? Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Create Account

  1. Go to Passport Seva Website
  2. Click on Register Now
  3. Select your Passport Office and City
  4. Enter Name and Email ID. Best to use Email as User ID
  5. You’ll get a confirmation link on email. Activate your account

Step 2: Fill the Form

Login and click Apply for Fresh Passport. Fill Personal Details, Address, Parents Name, Education, Employment, Emergency Contact.

Step 3: Upload Documents

Select DOB Proof, Address Proof, Non-ECR Proof. You can also use DigiLocker to fetch documents directly.

Step 4: Book Appointment + Payment

  1. After submitting, you’ll see available PSK centers and dates. Green dates are available
  2. Select date + center and pay ₹1500 or ₹3500 online via UPI, Debit/Credit Card
  3. After payment you’ll get Application Reference Number and Appointment Receipt. Take a printout

4. What Happens at Passport Office?

Reach 30 minutes early. Carry:

  1. Printed Appointment Receipt
  2. Photocopy + Original of all documents

3 Counter Process:

  • Counter A: Document scanning, Photo, Fingerprint, Signature
  • Counter B: Document Verification
  • Counter C: Final Approval

No extra payment needed at the office.

5. Police Verification and Delivery

After the office visit, your file goes to the Police Station you selected. A police officer will call and do address verification at your home.

After verification, you’ll get your passport by Speed Post within 10-15 days.

6. How to Track Application Status?

Login to Passport Seva and go to View Saved/Submitted Applications to track your ARN status.
